Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

Daniel 6:20

_ _ living God — having life Himself, and able to preserve thy life; contrasted with the lifeless idols. Darius borrowed the phrase from Daniel; God extorting from an idolater a confession of the truth.

_ _ thou servest continually — in times of persecution, as well as in times of peace.

_ _ is thy God ... able — the language of doubt, yet hope.

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on Daniel 6:18-24.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

Daniel 6:20

Able to deliver — What he doubted of, we are sure of, that the servants of the living God, have a master who is able to deliver them and bear them out in his service.

Geneva Bible Translation Notes

Daniel 6:20

And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: [and] the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, (g) able to deliver thee from the lions?

(g) This declares that Darius was not touched with the true knowledge of God, because he doubted of his power.
