John 17:12
_ _ I kept guarded.
_ _ them in thy name acting as Thy Representative on earth.
_ _ none of them is lost, but the son of perdition It is not implied here that the son of perdition was one of those whom the Father had given to the Son, but rather the contrary (John 13:18) [Webster and Wilkinson]. It is just as in Luke 4:26, Luke 4:27, where we are not to suppose that the woman of Sarepta (in Sidon) was one of the widows of Israel, nor Naaman the Syrian one of the lepers in Israel, though the language the same as here might seem to express it.
_ _ son of perdition doomed to it (2 Thessalonians 2:3; Mark 14:21). |
John 17:12
Those whom thou hast given me I have guarded, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition So one even of them whom God had given him is lost. So far was even that decree from being unchangeable! That the Scripture might be fulfilled That is, whereby the Scripture was fulfilled. The son of perdition signifies one that deservedly perishes; as a son of death, 2 Samuel 12:5; children of hell, Matthew 23:15, and children of wrath, Ephesians 2:3, signify persons justly obnoxious to death, hell, wrath. Psalms 109:8. |
- I kept:
John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. John 6:39-40 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. ... And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. John 10:27-28 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: ... And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any [man] pluck them out of my hand. Hebrews 2:13 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.

John 13:18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. John 18:9 That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none. Luke 4:26-27 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, [a city] of Sidon, unto a woman [that was] a widow. ... And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian. 1 John 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would [no doubt] have continued with us: but [they went out], that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

John 6:70-71 Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? ... He spake of Judas Iscariot [the son] of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve. John 13:18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. 2 Thessalonians 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for [that day shall not come], except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

Psalms 109:6-19 Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand. ... Let it be unto him as the garment [which] covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually. Acts 1:16-20 Men [and] brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. ... For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take. Acts 1:25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
