2 Timothy 2:18
_ _ erred Greek, “missed the aim” (see 1 Timothy 6:21).
_ _ is past already has already taken place. The beginnings of the subsequent Gnostic heresy already existed. They “wrested” (2 Peter 3:16) Paul’s own words (Romans 6:4; Ephesians 2:6; Colossians 2:12) “to their own destruction,” as though the resurrection was merely the spiritual raising of souls from the death of sin. Compare 1 Corinthians 15:12, where he shows all our hopes of future glory rest on the literal reality of the resurrection. To believe it past (as the Seleucians or Hermians did, according to Augustine [Epistles, 119.55, To Januarius, 4]), is to deny it in its true sense.
_ _ overthrow trying to subvert “the foundation” on which alone faith can rest secure (2 Timothy 2:19; compare Titus 1:11). |
2 Timothy 2:18

- concerning:
Matthew 22:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. 1 Timothy 1:19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: 1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Timothy 6:21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace [be] with thee. Amen. [[[The first to Timothy was written from Laodicea, which is the chiefest city of Phrygia Pacatiana.]]] Hebrews 3:10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in [their] heart; and they have not known my ways. James 5:19 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;

- that:
1 Corinthians 15:12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

- overthrow:
2 Timothy 2:14 Of these things put [them] in remembrance, charging [them] before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, [but] to the subverting of the hearers. Matthew 15:13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Luke 8:13 They on the rock [are they], which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. Luke 22:31-32 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired [to have] you, that he may sift [you] as wheat: ... But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. Acts 5:39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God. 1 Corinthians 11:19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. 1 John 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would [no doubt] have continued with us: but [they went out], that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
