Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

1 Corinthians 7:22

_ _ the Lord’s freeman — (Philemon 1:16) — rather, “freedman.” Though a slave externally, spiritually made free by the Lord: from sin, John 8:36; from the law, Romans 8:2; from “circumcision,” 1 Corinthians 7:19; Galatians 5:1.

_ _ Christ’s servant — (1 Corinthians 9:21). Love makes Christ’s service perfect freedom (Matthew 11:29, Matthew 11:30; Galatians 5:13; 1 Peter 2:16).

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on 1 Corinthians 7:17-24.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

1 Corinthians 7:22

Is the Lord's freeman — Is free in this respect. The Greek word implies one that was a slave, but now is free. Is the bondman of Christ — Not free in this respect; not at liberty to do his own will.

Geneva Bible Translation Notes

1 Corinthians 7:22

For he that is called in the (q) Lord, [being] a servant, is the Lord's freeman: likewise also he that is called, [being] free, is Christ's servant.

(q) He that is in the state of a servant, and is called to be a Christian.
