2 Corinthians 10:6
_ _ Translate, “Having ourselves (that is, being) in readiness to exact punishment for all disobedience,” etc. We have this in store for the disobedient: it will be brought into action in due time.
_ _ when your obedience, etc. He charitably assumes that most of the Corinthian Church will act obediently; therefore he says “YOUR obedience.” But perhaps some will act otherwise; in order, therefore, to give all an opportunity of joining the obedient, he will not prematurely exact punishment, but wait until the full number of those gathered out to Christ has been “completed,” and the remainder have been proved incorrigible. He had acted already so at Corinth (Acts 18:6-11; compare Exodus 32:34; Matthew 13:28-30). |
2 Corinthians 10:6
Being in readiness to avenge all disobedience Not only by spiritual censure, but miraculous punishments. When your obedience is fulfilled When the sound part of you have given proof of your obedience, so that I am in no danger of punishing the innocent with the guilty. |

2 Corinthians 13:2 I told you before, and foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them which heretofore have sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not spare: 2 Corinthians 13:10 Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction. Numbers 16:26-30 And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins. ... But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that [appertain] unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD. Acts 5:3-11 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back [part] of the price of the land? ... And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things. Acts 13:10-11 And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, [thou] child of the devil, [thou] enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? ... And now, behold, the hand of the Lord [is] upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand. 1 Corinthians 4:21 What will ye? shall I come unto you with a rod, or in love, and [in] the spirit of meekness? 1 Corinthians 5:3-5 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, [concerning] him that hath so done this deed, ... To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 1 Timothy 1:20 Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme. 3 John 1:10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth [them] out of the church.
