Psalms 119:157
_ _ Here is, 1. David surrounded with difficulties and dangers: Many are my persecutors and my enemies. When Saul the king was his persecutor and enemy no marvel that many more were so: multitudes will follow the pernicious ways of abused authority. David, being a public person, had many enemies, but withal he had many friends, who loved him and wished him well; let him set the one over-against the other. In this David was a type both of Christ and his church. The enemies, the persecutors, of both, are many, very many. 2. David established in the way of his duty, notwithstanding: “Yet do I not decline from thy testimonies, as knowing that while I adhere to them God is for me; and then no matter who is against me.” A man who is steady in the way of his duty, though he may have many enemies, needs fear none. |
- Many:
Psalms 3:1-2 [[A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son.]] LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! many [are] they that rise up against me. ... Many [there be] which say of my soul, [There is] no help for him in God. Selah. Psalms 22:12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong [bulls] of Bashan have beset me round. Psalms 25:19 Consider mine enemies; for they are many; and they hate me with cruel hatred. Psalms 56:2 Mine enemies would daily swallow [me] up: for [they be] many that fight against me, O thou most High. Psalms 118:10-12 All nations compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD will I destroy them. ... They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them. Matthew 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. Matthew 26:47 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. Acts 4:27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,

- yet do I:
Psalms 119:51 The proud have had me greatly in derision: [yet] have I not declined from thy law. Psalms 119:110 The wicked have laid a snare for me: yet I erred not from thy precepts. Psalms 44:17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant. Job 17:9 The righteous also shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger. Job 23:11 My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined. Isaiah 42:4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law. Acts 20:23-24 Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me. ... But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. 1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
