_ _ Wetrue teachers of Christ: in contrast to them.

_ _ are of God — and therefore speak of God: in contrast to “speak they of the world,” 1 John 4:5.

_ _ knoweth God — as his Father, being a child “of God” (1 John 2:13, 1 John 2:14).

_ _ heareth us — Compare John 18:37, “Every one that is of the truth, heareth My voice.”

_ _ Hereby — (1 John 4:2-6); by their confessing, or not confessing, Jesus; by the kind of reception given them respectively by those who know God, and by those who are of the world and not of God.

_ _ spirit of truththe Spirit which comes from God and teaches truth.

(5) We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the (e) spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

(5) He testifies to them that his doctrine and the doctrine of his companions, is the assured word of God which of necessity we have boldly to set against all the mouths of the whole world, and thereby discern the truth from falsehood.

(e) True prophets, against whom are false prophets, that is, those who err and lead others into error.
