Ecclesiastes 7:12
_ _ Literally, (To be) in (that is, under) the shadow (Isaiah 30:2) of wisdom (is the same as to be) in (under) the shadow of money; wisdom no less shields one from the ills of life than money does.
_ _ is, that rather, “the excellency of the knowledge of wisdom giveth life,” that is, life in the highest sense, here and hereafter (Proverbs 3:18; John 17:3; 2 Peter 1:3). Wisdom (religion) cannot be lost as money can. It shields one in adversity, as well as prosperity; money, only in prosperity. The question in Ecclesiastes 7:10 implies a want of it. |
Ecclesiastes 7:12
Life But herein knowledge of wisdom excels riches, that whereas riches frequently expose men to destruction, true wisdom doth often preserve a man from temporal, and always from eternal ruin. |
- wisdom:
Job 1:10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. Job 22:21-25 Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. ... Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver. Proverbs 2:7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: [he is] a buckler to them that walk uprightly. Proverbs 2:11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: Proverbs 14:20 The poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich [hath] many friends. Proverbs 18:10-11 The name of the LORD [is] a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. ... The rich man's wealth [is] his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit. Isaiah 33:6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, [and] strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD [is] his treasure.
