2 Chronicles 20:3-4
_ _ Jehoshaphat ... proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah Alarmed by the intelligence and conscious of his total inability to repel this host of invaders, Jehoshaphat felt his only refuge was at the horns of the altar. He resolved to employ the aid of his God, and, in conformity with this resolution, he summoned all his subjects to observe a solemn fast at the sanctuary. It was customary with the Hebrew kings to proclaim fasts in perilous circumstances, either in a city, a district, or throughout the entire kingdom, according to the greatness of the emergency. On this occasion, it was a universal fast, which extended to infants (2 Chronicles 20:13; see also Joel 2:15, Joel 2:16; Jonah 3:7). |
2 Chronicles 20:3
And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself (c) to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
(c) This declares what the fear of the godly is, which is the prick to stir them to prayer and to depend on the Lord, while it moves the wicked either to seek after worldly means and policies or else to fall into despair. |

Genesis 32:24-28 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. ... And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. Psalms 56:3-4 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. ... In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. Isaiah 37:3-6 And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day [is] a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and [there is] not strength to bring forth. ...
