Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

Job 21:16

_ _ not in their hand — but in the hand of God. This is Job’s difficulty, that God who has sinners prosperity (good) in His hand should allow them to have it.

_ _ is — rather, “may the counsel of the wicked be far from me!” [Umbreit]. This naturally follows the sentiment of the first clause: Let me not hereby be thought to regard with aught but horror the ways of the wicked, however prosperous.

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on Job 21:7-16.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

Job 21:16

Lo — But wicked men have no reason to reject God, because of their prosperity, for their wealth, is not in their hand; neither obtained, nor kept by their own might, but only by God's power and favour. Therefore I am far from approving their opinion, or following their course.

Geneva Bible Translation Notes

Lo, their good [is] not in their (h) hand: the counsel of the wicked (i) is far from me.

(h) It is not their own, but God only lends it to them.
