Acts 11:16-17
_ _ Then remembered I the word ... John ... baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Forasmuch then, etc. that is, “Since God Himself has put them on a level with ourselves, by bestowing on them what the Lord Jesus pronounced the higher baptism of the Holy Ghost, would it not have been to withstand God if I had withheld from them the lower baptism of water, and kept aloof from them as still ‘unclean?’” |
Acts 11:17
To us, when we believed The sense is, because we believed, not because we were circumcised, was the Holy Ghost given to us. What was I A mere instrument in God's hand. They had inquired only concerning his eating with the Gentiles. He satisfies them likewise concerning his baptizing them, and shows that he had done right in going to Cornelius, not only by the command of God, but also by the event, the descent of the Holy Ghost. And who are we that we should withstand God? Particularly by laying down rules of Christian communion which exclude any whom he has admitted into the Church of the first born, from worshipping God together. O that all Church governors would consider how bold an usurpation this is on the authority of the supreme Lord of the Church! O that the sin of thus withstanding God may not be laid to the charge of those, who perhaps with a good intention, but in an over fondness for their own forms, have done it, and are continually doing it. |
- as God:
Acts 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Acts 15:8-9 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as [he did] unto us; ... And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Matthew 20:14-15 Take [that] thine [is], and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. ... Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? Romans 9:15-16 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. ... So then [it is] not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. Romans 9:23-24 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, ... Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? Romans 11:34-36 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? ... For of him, and through him, and to him, [are] all things: to whom [be] glory for ever. Amen.

- what:
Acts 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? Job 9:12-14 Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou? ... How much less shall I answer him, [and] choose out my words [to reason] with him? Job 33:13 Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters. Job 40:2 Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct [him]? he that reproveth God, let him answer it. Job 40:8-9 Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous? ... Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him? Daniel 4:35 And all the inhabitants of the earth [are] reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and [among] the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou? Romans 9:20-26 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed [it], Why hast thou made me thus? ... And it shall come to pass, [that] in the place where it was said unto them, Ye [are] not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.
