2 Corinthians 1:22
_ _ sealed A seal is a token assuring the possession of property to one; “sealed” here answers to “stablisheth us” (2 Corinthians 1:21; 1 Corinthians 9:2).
_ _ the earnest of the Spirit that is, the Spirit as the earnest (that is, money given by a purchaser as a pledge for the full payment of the sum promised). The Holy Spirit is given to the believer now as a first installment to assure him his full inheritance as a son of God shall be his hereafter (Ephesians 1:13, Ephesians 1:14). “Sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession” (Romans 8:23). The Spirit is the pledge of the fulfillment of “all the promises” (2 Corinthians 1:20). |
2 Corinthians 1:22
Who also hath sealed us Stamping his image on our hearts, thus marking and sealing us as his own property. And given us the earnest of his Spirit There is a difference between an earnest and a pledge. A pledge is to be restored when the debt is paid; but an earnest is not taken away, but completed. Such an earnest is the Spirit. The first fruits of it we have Romans 8:23; and we wait for all the fulness. |
2 Corinthians 1:22
Who hath also sealed us, and given the (y) earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
(y) An earnest is whatever is given to confirm a promise. |

Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 2 Timothy 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. Revelation 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth [it]. Revelation 7:3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. Revelation 9:4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: Romans 8:23 And not only [they], but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, [to wit], the redemption of our body.
