Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

Judges 2:11-19

_ _ Judges 2:11-19. Wickedness of the new generation after Joshua.

_ _ the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord — This chapter, together with the first eight verses of the next [Judges 2:11-3:8], contains a brief but comprehensive summary of the principles developed in the following history. An attentive consideration of them, therefore, is of the greatest importance to a right understanding of the strange and varying phases of Israelitish history, from the death of Joshua till the establishment of the monarchy.

_ _ served Baalim — The plural is used to include all the gods of the country.

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on Judges 2:6-23.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

Judges 2:11

In the sight — Which notes the heinousness and impudence of their sins, above other peoples; because God's presence was with them, and his eye upon them in a peculiar manner, which also they were not ignorant of, and therefore were guilty of more contempt of God than other people. Baalim — False gods. He useth the plural number, because the gods of the Canaanites, and adjoining nations, which Israel worshipped, were most of them called by the name of Baal.

Geneva Bible Translation Notes

Judges 2:11

And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served (e) Baalim:
