John 19:14
_ _ It was the preparation that is, the day before the Jewish sabbath.
_ _ and about the sixth hour The true reading here is probably, “the third hour” or nine a.m. which agrees best with the whole series of events, as well as with the other Evangelists.
_ _ he saith to the Jews, Behold your King! Having now made up his mind to yield to them, he takes a sort of quiet revenge on them by this irony, which he knew would sting them. This only reawakens their cry to dispatch Him. |
John 19:14
It was the preparation of the passover For this reason both the Jews and Pilate were desirous to bring the matter to a conclusion. Every Friday was called the preparation, (namely, for the Sabbath.) And as often as the passover fell on a Friday, that day was called the preparation of the passover. |
- the preparation:
John 19:31-32 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and [that] they might be taken away. ... Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. John 19:42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation [day]; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand. Matthew 27:62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, Mark 15:42 And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, Luke 23:54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.

- the sixth:
- Instead of εκτη [Strong's G1623], sixth, several manuscripts and fathers have τριτη [Strong's G5154], third, as in the parallel place.
Mark 15:25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. Mark 15:33-34 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. ... And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

- Behold:
John 19:3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. John 19:5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And [Pilate] saith unto them, Behold the man! John 19:19-22 And Pilate wrote a title, and put [it] on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. ... Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
