- The word duke is from the Latin dux, a captain or leader, from duco, to lead, guide; which is the exact import of the Hebrew (אלוף [Strong's H0441]), alluph, from אלף, to lead, guide; and is here applied to heads of families, chieftains, or princes, who were military leaders.
