me?
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

1 Samuel 9:20-21

_ _ on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father’s house? — This was a covert and indirect premonition of the royal dignity that awaited him; and, though Saul’s answer shows that he fully understood it, he affected to doubt that the prophet was in earnest.

1 Samuel 9:21

_ _ And Saul answered and said, Amos not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel, etc. — By selecting a king from this least and nearly extinct tribe (Judges 20:46-48), divine wisdom designed to remove all grounds of jealousy among the other tribes.

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on 1 Samuel 9:18-27.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

1 Samuel 9:21

The smallest — For so indeed this was, having been all cut off except six hundred, Judges 20:46-48, which blow they never recovered, and therefore they were scarce reckoned as an entire tribe, but only as a remnant of a tribe; and being ingrafted into Judah, in the division between the ten tribes and the two, they in some sort lost their name, and together with Judah were accounted but one tribe.
