Psalms 80:2
_ _ Before Ephraim, etc. These tribes marched next the ark (Numbers 2:18-24). The name of Benjamin may be introduced merely in allusion to that fact, and not because that tribe was identified with Israel in the schism (1 Kings 12:16-21; compare also Numbers 10:24). |
Psalms 80:2
Before Ephraim Here is an allusion to the ancient situation of the tabernacle in the wilderness, where these tribes were placed on the west side of the tabernacle, in which the ark was, which consequently was before them. |
- Before:
- These three tribes, in the wilderness, marched immediately after the ark and cherubim, by Divine appointment, to which this appears to be an allusion.
Numbers 2:18-24 On the west side [shall be] the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their armies: and the captain of the sons of Ephraim [shall be] Elishama the son of Ammihud. ... All that were numbered of the camp of Ephraim [were] an hundred thousand and eight thousand and an hundred, throughout their armies. And they shall go forward in the third rank. Numbers 10:22-24 And the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their armies: and over his host [was] Elishama the son of Ammihud. ... And over the host of the tribe of the children of Benjamin [was] Abidan the son of Gideoni.

- stir up:
Psalms 35:23 Stir up thyself, and awake to my judgment, [even] unto my cause, my God and my Lord. Psalms 44:23-26 Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast [us] not off for ever. ... Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake. Psalms 78:38 But he, [being] full of compassion, forgave [their] iniquity, and destroyed [them] not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath. Isaiah 42:13-14 The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies. ... I have long time holden my peace; I have been still, [and] refrained myself: [now] will I cry like a travailing woman; I will destroy and devour at once.

- come and save us:
- Heb. come for salvation to us,
Isaiah 25:9 And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this [is] our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this [is] the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation. Isaiah 33:22 For the LORD [is] our judge, the LORD [is] our lawgiver, the LORD [is] our king; he will save us.
