Inheritance by Marriage

1 aAnd the heads° of the fathers’° [households] of the family° of the sons° of Gilead°, the son° of Machir°, the son° of Manasseh°, of the families° of the sons° of Joseph°, came° near° and spoke° before° Moses° and before° the leaders°, the heads° of the fathers’° [households] of the sons° of Israel°, 2 and they said°, “The LORD° commanded° my lord° to give° the land° by lot° to the sons° of Israel° as an inheritance°, and my lord° awas commanded° by the LORD° to give° the inheritance° of Zelophehad° our brother° to his daughters°. 3 But if they Imarry°° one° of the sons° of the [other] tribes° of the sons° of Israel°, their inheritance° will be withdrawn° from the inheritance° of our fathers° and will be added° to the inheritance° of the tribe° to which° they belong°; thus it will be withdrawn° from our allotted° inheritance°. 4 When° the ajubilee° of the sons° of Israel° Icomes°, then their inheritance° will be added° to the inheritance° of the tribe° to which° they belong°; so their inheritance° will be withdrawn° from the inheritance° of the tribe° of our fathers°.”

5 ¶ Then Moses° commanded° the sons° of Israel° according° to the Iword° of the LORD°, saying°, “The tribe° of the sons° of Joseph° are right° in [their] statements°. 6 aThis° is Iwhat°° the LORD° has commanded° concerning the daughters° of Zelophehad°, saying°, ‘Let them marry°° IIwhom they wish°°; only° they must marry°° within the family° of the tribe° of their father°.’ 7 Thus ano° inheritance° of the sons° of Israel° shall Ibe transferred° from tribe° to tribe°, for the sons° of Israel° shall each° IIhold° to the inheritance° of the tribe° of his fathers°. 8 aEvery° daughter° who comes° into possession° of an inheritance° of any° tribe° of the sons° of Israel° shall be wife° to one° of the family° of the tribe° of her father°, so° that the sons° of Israel° each° may possess° the inheritance° of his fathers°. 9 Thus no° inheritance° shall Ibe transferred° from one tribe° to another° tribe°, for the tribes° of the sons° of Israel° shall each° IIhold° to his own inheritance°.”

10 ¶ Just° as the LORD° had commanded° Moses°, so° the daughters° of Zelophehad° did°: 11 aMahlah°, Tirzah°, Hoglah°, Milcah° and Noah°, the daughters° of Zelophehad° married° their uncles’° sons°. 12 They married° [those] from the families° of the sons° of Manasseh° the son° of Joseph°, and their inheritance° Iremained° with the tribe° of the family° of their father°.

The inconvenience of the inheritance of daughters,

1 ¶ And the chiefº fathersº of the familiesº of the childrenº of Gilead,º the sonº of Machir,º the sonº of Manasseh,º of the familiesº² of the sonsº of Joseph,º came near,ºª and spakeºª beforeº Moses,º and beforeº the princes,º the chiefº fathersº of the childrenº of Israel:º 2 And they said,ºª The LORDº commandedºª² my lordº to giveºª² the landº for an inheritanceº by lotº to the childrenº of Israel:º and my lordº was commandedºª by the LORDº to giveºª² the inheritanceº of Zelophehadº our brotherº unto his daughters.º 3 And if they be marriedº² to anyº of the sonsº² of the [other] tribesº of the childrenº of Israel,º then shall their inheritanceº be takenºª from the inheritanceº² of our fathers,º and shall be putºª to² the inheritanceº of the tribeº whereunto² they are received:² so shall it be takenºª from the lotº² of our inheritance.º 4 And when² the jubileº of the childrenº of Israelº shall be,² then shall their inheritanceº be putºª unto² the inheritanceº of the tribeº whereunto² they are received:² so shall their inheritanceº be taken awayºª from the inheritanceº² of the tribeº of our fathers.º

is remedied by marrying in their own tribes,

5 And Mosesº commandedºª² the childrenº of Israelº according to² the wordº of the LORD,º saying,ºª The tribeº of the sonsº of Josephº hath saidºª well.² 6 This² [is] the thingº which² the LORDº doth commandºª concerning the daughtersº of Zelophehad,º saying,ºª Let them marryº² to whom they think¹ best;º² only² to the familyº of the tribeº of their fatherº shall they marry.º²

lest the inheritance should be removed from the tribe.

7 So shall not² the inheritanceº of the childrenº of Israelº removeºª from tribeº² to² tribe:º for² every oneº of the childrenº of Israelº shall keepºª himself to the inheritanceº of the tribeº of his fathers.º 8 And every² daughter,º that possessethºª an inheritanceº in any tribeº² of the childrenº of Israel,º shall be² wifeº unto oneº of the familyº² of the tribeº of her father,º that² the childrenº of Israelº may enjoyºª every manº the inheritanceº of his fathers.º 9 Neither² shall the inheritanceº removeºª from [one] tribeº² to anotherº tribe;º but² every oneº of the tribesº of the childrenº of Israelº shall keepºª himself to his own inheritance.º

The daughters of Zelophehad marry their father's brothers' sons.

10 Even as² the LORDº commandedºª² Moses,º so² didºª the daughtersº of Zelophehad:º 11 For Mahlah,º Tirzah,º and Hoglah,º and Milcah,º and Noah,º the daughtersº of Zelophehad,º were marriedº² unto their father's¹ brothers'² sons:º 12 [And] they were marriedº² into the familiesº² of the sonsº of Manassehº the sonº of Joseph,º and their inheritanceº remained² in² the tribeº of the familyº of their father.º 13 These² [are] the commandmentsº and the judgments,º which² the LORDº commandedºª by the handº of Mosesº unto² the childrenº of Israelº in the plainsº of Moabº by² Jordanº [near] Jericho.º
