John 5:37

_ _ the Father himself ... hath borne witness of me — not referring, probably, to the voice of His baptism, but (as seems from what follows) to the testimony of the Old Testament Scripture [Calvin, Lucke, Meyer, Luthardt, etc.].

_ _ neither heard his voice, etc. — never recognized Him in this character. The words are “designedly mysterious, like many others which our Lord uttered” [Stier].

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on John 5:31-47.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

John 5:37

He hath testified of me — Namely at my baptism. I speak not of my supposed father Joseph. Ye are utter strangers to him of whom I speak.
