Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

Job 32:8

_ _ Elihu claims inspiration, as a divinely commissioned messenger to Job (Job 33:6, Job 33:23); and that claim is not contradicted in Job 42:4, Job 42:5. Translate: “But the spirit (which God puts) in man, and the inspiration ... is that which giveth,” etc.; it is not mere “years” which give understanding (Proverbs 2:6; John 20:22).

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on Job 32:6-14.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

Job 32:8

Spirit — The spirit of God. Giveth — To whom he pleaseth.

Geneva Bible Translation Notes

Job 32:8

But [there is] a spirit in man: (f) and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

(f) It is a special gift of God that man has understanding and comes neither from nature nor by age.
