Ecclesiastes 9:6
_ _ love, and ... hatred, etc. (referring to Ecclesiastes 9:1; see on Ecclesiastes 9:1). Not that these cease in a future world absolutely (Ezekiel 32:27; Revelation 22:11); but as the end of this verse shows, relatively to persons and things in this world. Man’s love and hatred can no longer be exercised for good or evil in the same way as here; but the fruits of them remain. What he is at death he remains for ever. “Envy,” too, marks the wicked as referred to, since it was therewith that they assailed the righteous (see on Ecclesiastes 9:1).
_ _ portion Their “portion” was “in this life” (Psalms 17:14), that they now “cannot have any more.” |
Ecclesiastes 9:6
Also They neither love, nor hate, nor envy any thing in this world, but are unconcerned in what is done under the sun. |
- their love:
Exodus 1:8 Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph. Job 3:17-18 There the wicked cease [from] troubling; and there the weary be at rest. ... [There] the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor. Psalms 146:3-4 Put not your trust in princes, [nor] in the son of man, in whom [there is] no help. ... His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. Proverbs 10:28 The hope of the righteous [shall be] gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish. Matthew 2:20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.
|
- have they:
Ecclesiastes 2:18-23 Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me. ... For all his days [are] sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity. Ecclesiastes 6:12 For who knoweth what [is] good for man in [this] life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
