Ephesians 2:9

_ _ Not of works — This clause stands in contrast to “by grace,” as is confirmed by Romans 4:4, Romans 4:5; Romans 11:6.

_ _ lest — rather, as Greek, “that no man should boast” (Romans 3:27; Romans 4:2).

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on Ephesians 2:4-10.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

Not by works — Neither this faith nor this salvation is owing to any works you ever did, will, or can do.

Geneva Bible Translation Notes

Ephesians 2:9

(9) Not of works, lest any man should boast.

(9) He specifically and completely takes away from our works the praise of justification, seeing that the good works themselves are the effects of grace in us.
