Ecclesiastes 5:19
_ _ As Ecclesiastes 5:18 refers to the “laboring” man (Ecclesiastes 5:12), so Ecclesiastes 5:19 to the “rich” man, who gets wealth not by “oppression” (Ecclesiastes 5:8), but by “God’s gift.” He is distinguished also from the “rich” man (Ecclesiastes 6:2) in having received by God’s gift not only “wealth,” but also “power to eat thereof,” which that one has not.
_ _ to take his portion limits him to the lawful use of wealth, not keeping back from God His portion while enjoying his own. |
Ecclesiastes 5:19
To take To use what God hath given him. |
- to whom:
Ecclesiastes 2:24 [There is] nothing better for a man, [than] that he should eat and drink, and [that] he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it [was] from the hand of God. Ecclesiastes 3:13 And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it [is] the gift of God. Ecclesiastes 6:2 A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this [is] vanity, and it [is] an evil disease. Deuteronomy 8:18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for [it is] he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as [it is] this day. 1 Kings 3:13 And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.

- this is:
Ecclesiastes 2:24-26 [There is] nothing better for a man, [than] that he should eat and drink, and [that] he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it [was] from the hand of God. ... For [God] giveth to a man that [is] good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to [him that is] good before God. This also [is] vanity and vexation of spirit.
