Dimnah:
This and the following verse are wholly omitted by the Masora, and many Hebrew Bibles which are esteemed very highly; though, without them, neither the twelve cities of the Merarites in particular (
Joshua 21:40 So all the cities for the children of Merari by their families, which were remaining of the families of the Levites, were [by] their lot twelve cities.
), nor the forty-eight Levitical cities in general (
Joshua 21:41 All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel [were] forty and eight cities with their suburbs.
), nor the six cities of refuge, can be made up. But these two verses, are thus absolutely necessary for the truth and consistency of this chapter, are happily preserved in no less than 149 manuscripts collated by Dr. Kennicott, and upwards of 40 collated by De Rossi.
Joshua 21:35 Dimnah with her suburbs, Nahalal with her suburbs; four cities.
