Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

Romans 3:21-23

_ _ Romans 3:21-26. God’s justifying righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ, alike adapted to our necessities and worthy of himself.

_ _ But now the righteousness of God — (See on Romans 1:17).

_ _ without the law — that is, a righteousness to which our obedience to the law contributes nothing whatever (Romans 3:28; Galatians 2:16).

_ _ is manifested, being witnessed — attested.

_ _ by the law and the prophets — the Old Testament Scriptures. Thus this justifying righteousness, though new, as only now fully disclosed, is an old righteousness, predicted and foreshadowed in the Old Testament.

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on Romans 3:19-31.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

Romans 3:21

Without the law — Without that previous obedience which the law requires; without reference to the law, or dependence on it. Is manifested — In the gospel. Being attested by the Law itself, and by the Prophets — By all the promises in the Old Testament.
