Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

Obadiah 1:18

_ _ fire — See the same figure, Numbers 21:28; Isaiah 5:24; Isaiah 10:17.

_ _ house of Jacob ... Joseph — that is, the two kingdoms, Judah and Ephraim or Israel [Jerome]. The two shall form one kingdom, their former feuds being laid aside (Isaiah 11:12, Isaiah 11:13; Isaiah 37:22-28; Jeremiah 3:18; Hosea 1:11). The Jews returned with some of the Israelites from Babylon; and, under John Hyrcanus, so subdued and, compelling them to be circumcised, incorporated the Idumeans with themselves that they formed part of the nation [Josephus, Antiquities, 13.17; 12.11]. This was but an earnest of the future union of Israel and Judah in the possession of the enlarged land as one kingdom (Ezekiel 37:16, etc.).

_ _ stubble — (Malachi 4:1).

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on Obadiah 1:17-21.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

Obadiah 1:18

Shall kindle — This was fulfilled in part by Hyrcanus and the Maccabees, 1 Macc. 5:3, but will be more fully accomplished, when the Lord shall make his church as a fire to all its enemies.

Geneva Bible Translation Notes

Obadiah 1:18

And the house of Jacob shall be (n) a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be [any] remaining of the house of Esau; for the LORD hath spoken [it].

(n) God attributes this power to consume his enemies to his Church, which power properly belongs only to himself; (Isaiah 10:17; Deuteronomy 4:24; Hebrews 12:29).

The significance of "house of Jacob" and "house of Joseph" is toward the Northern peoples, known as "Israel" (as opposed to the Southern peoples, known as "Judah". This is quite a prophecy/promise.
