And I say unto you, That
many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit
down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in
the kingdom of heaven. ... But the children
of the kingdom shall be cast
out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
So the last
shall be first, and the first last: for
many be called, but few chosen.
Whether of them twain did
the will of [his
] father? They say unto him, The first
. Jesus saith unto them, Verily
I say unto you, That the publicans
and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. ... For John came
unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed
him not: but the publicans
and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen [it
not afterward, that ye might believe him.
But many [that are
] first shall be last; and the last first.
And all the people that heard [him
], and the publicans, justified
baptized with the baptism of John. ... But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel
of God against
themselves, being not baptized of him.
And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.
And the publican, standing
afar off, would not lift up so much as [his
] eyes unto heaven, but
smote upon his breast, saying, God
be merciful to me a sinner
. ... I tell you, this man went
down to his house justified
] than the other: for every
one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Moreover the law
entered, that the offence might abound. But
where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: ... That
as sin hath reigned unto
death, even so might grace
righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
we say then? That the Gentiles
, which followed
not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness
which is of faith. ... As it is written, Behold
, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever
believeth on him shall not be ashamed
Ye did run
well; who did hinder you
that ye should not obey
Let us therefore
fear, lest, a promise
being left [us
] of entering into his
of you should seem to come short of it.
