for justice, nor [any
] pleadeth for truth: they trust
in vanity, and speak
lies; they conceive
mischief, and bring forth iniquity.
the wicked for reward
, and take
away the righteousness of the righteous from him!
Woe unto them
that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness
] they have prescribed; ... To turn aside
the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows
may be their prey, and [that
] they may rob the fatherless!
long will ye judge
unjustly, and accept
the persons of the wicked? Selah. ... They know not
, neither will they understand; they walk
on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course
And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, [that
] wickedness [was
] there; and the place of righteousness, [that
] iniquity [was
As a cage
is full of birds, so [are]
their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich. ... They are waxen
fat, they shine: yea, they overpass
the deeds of the wicked: they judge
not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet
they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.
prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule
by their means; and my people love [to have it
] so: and what
will ye do in the end thereof?
Ye who turn
judgment to wormwood, and leave
off righteousness in the earth,
Forasmuch therefore as your treading
] upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built
houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards
, but ye shall not drink wine of them.
Hear this, I pray
you, ye heads of the house of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel, that
abhor judgment, and pervert all equity. ... The heads
thereof judge for reward, and the priests
thereof teach for hire, and the prophets
thereof divine for money: yet
will they lean upon the LORD, and say
] not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us.
That they may do
evil with both hands earnestly, the prince
asketh, and the judge [asketh
] for a reward; and the great
], he uttereth his mischievous desire
: so they wrap it up. ... Trust ye not in
a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep
the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom.
Therefore the law
is slacked, and judgment doth never go forth: for
the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore wrong
Woe to her that is filthy
and polluted, to the
oppressing city! ... Her princes
within her [are
] roaring lions; her judges [are
wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow.
