Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

Isaiah 40:10

_ _ with strong hand — or, “against the strong”; rather, “as a strong one” [Maurer]. Or, against the strong one, namely, Satan (Matthew 12:29; Revelation 20:2, Revelation 20:3, Revelation 20:10) [Vitringa].

_ _ arm — power (Psalms 89:13; Psalms 98:1).

_ _ for him — that is, He needs not to seek help for Himself from any external source, but by His own inherent power He gains rule for Himself (so Isaiah 40:14).

_ _ work — or, “recompense for his work”; rather, “recompense which He gives for work” (Isaiah 62:11; Revelation 22:12).

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on Isaiah 40:9-11.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

Isaiah 40:10

His arm — He shall need no succours, for his own power shall be sufficient to govern his people, and to destroy his adversaries. His reward — He comes furnished with recompences as well of blessings for his friends, as of vengeance for his enemies. His work — He carries on his work effectually: for that is said in scripture to be before a man which is in his power.
