Daniel 2:9 [study!]

American Standard Version (ASV 1901) [2]
— But if ye make not known unto me the dream, there is but one law for you; for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can show me the interpretation thereof.
King James Version (KJV 1769)
— But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, [there is but] one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof.
New American Standard Bible (NASB ©1995)
— that if you do not make the dream known to me, there is only one decree for you. For you have agreed together to speak lying and corrupt words before me until the situation is changed; therefore tell me the dream, that I may know that you can declare to me its interpretation.”
Webster's Revision of the KJB (WEB 1833)
— But if ye will not make known to me the dream, [there is but] one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can show me the interpretation of it.
Darby's Translation (DBY 1890)
— but if ye do not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you; for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me its interpretation.
Rotherham's Emphasized Bible (EBR 1902)
— That, if, the dream, ye shall not make known to me, one and the same, is the decree, and, a lying and wicked word, have ye agreed to speak before me, that meanwhile the time may be changed,—therefore, the dream, tell ye me, so shall I know that, the interpretation thereof, ye can declare for me.
Young's Literal Translation (YLT 1898)
— [so] that, if the dream ye do not cause me to know—one is your sentence, seeing a word lying and corrupt ye have prepared to speak before me, till that the time is changed, therefore the dream tell ye to me, then do I know that its interpretation ye do shew me.'
Douay-Rheims Challoner Revision (DR 1750)
— If, therefore, you tell me not the dream, there is one sentence concerning you, that you have also framed a lying interpretation, and full of deceit, to speak before me till the time pass away. Tell me, therefore, the dream, that I may know that you also give a true interpretation thereof.
Original King James Bible (AV 1611) [2]
— But if yee will not make knowen vnto me the dreame, [there is but] one decree for you: for ye haue prepared lying, and corrupt words to speake before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dreame, and I shall know that yee can shewe mee the interpretation thereof.
Brenton Greek Septuagint (LXX, Restored Names)
— If then ye do not tell me the dream, I know that ye have concerted to utter before me a false and corrupt tale, until the time shall have past: tell me my dream, and I shall know that ye will also declare to me the interpretation thereof.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

Daniel 2:9

_ _ one decree — There can be no second one reversing the first (Esther 4:11).

_ _ corrupt — deceitful.

_ _ till the time be changed — till a new state of things arrive, either by my ceasing to trouble myself about the dream, or by a change of government (which perhaps the agitation caused by the dream made Nebuchadnezzar to forebode, and so to suspect the Chaldeans of plotting).

_ _ tell ... dream, and I shall know ... ye can show ... interpretation — If ye cannot tell the past, a dream actually presented to me, how can ye know, and show, the future events prefigured in it?

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on Daniel 2:1-13.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

Daniel 2:9

But one decree — I will not retract my sentence.
