Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

2 Timothy 3:15

_ _ from a child — literally, “from an infant.” The tender age of the first dawn of reason is that wherein the most lasting impressions of faith may be made.

_ _ holy scriptures — The Old Testament taught by his Jewish mother. An undesigned coincidence with 2 Timothy 1:5; Acts 16:1-3.

_ _ able — in themselves: though through men’s own fault they often do not in fact make men savingly alive.

_ _ wise unto salvation — that is, wise unto the attainment of salvation. Contrast “folly” (2 Timothy 3:9). Wise also in extending it to others.

_ _ through faith — as the instrument of this wisdom. Each knows divine things only as far as his own experience in himself extends. He who has not faith, has not wisdom or salvation.

_ _ which is in — that is, rests on Christ Jesus.

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on 2 Timothy 3:10-17.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

2 Timothy 3:15

From an infant thou hast known the holy scriptures — Of the Old Testament. These only were extant when Timothy was an infant. Which are able to make thee wise unto salvation, through faith in the Messiah that was to come. How much more are the Old and New Testament together able, in God's hand, to make us more abundantly wise unto salvation! Even such a measure of present salvation as was not known before Jesus was glorified.
