Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

1 Kings 21:13

_ _ there came in two men — worthless fellows who had been bribed to swear a falsehood. The law required two witnesses in capital offenses (Deuteronomy 17:6; Deuteronomy 19:15; Numbers 35:30; Matthew 26:60). Cursing God and cursing the king are mentioned in the law (Exodus 22:28) as offenses closely connected, the king of Israel being the earthly representative of God in His kingdom.

_ _ they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him — The law, which forbade cursing the rulers of the people, does not specify the penalty for this offense but either usage had sanctioned or the authorities of Jezreel had originated stoning as the proper punishment. It was always inflicted out of the city (Acts 7:58).

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on 1 Kings 21:5-16.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

1 Kings 21:13

Stoned him — And it seems his sons too, either with him or after him. For God afterward says, (2 Kings 9:26) I have seen the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons. Let us commit the keeping of our lives and comforts to God; for innocence itself will not always be our security.
